Habitat for Humanity’s vision is a world where everyone has a safe and decent place to live, and a world where housing poverty and homelessness are eliminated. We believe that the home is a key catalyst in helping to permanently break the cycle of poverty.

One in five people across the world live in slums and substandard housing, locking them into a grinding cycle of poverty.

This lack of housing negatively affects their health and well-being, educational prospects, and ability to make a living. As an international development charity, our vision is a world where everyone has a safe place to call home. We believe that a decent home helps to permanently break the cycle of poverty and allows families to achieve strength, stability, and self-reliance.

We believe decent homes are the heartbeat of strong communities. We also fight for land rights for women, upgrade urban slums and informal settlements, improve access to water and sanitation, and help communities become more resilient in the face of natural disasters.

Working in nearly 70 countries, we support the most marginalised and vulnerable in society, and welcome people of all religions and none to partner in our life-changing work. By working hand in hand with communities, since 1976 we have provided over 1 million homes and helped over 10 million people.

Our core work focuses on housing and shelter and we want vulnerable people everywhere to have the strength, stability, and self-reliance associated with having a place to call home.

To achieve our vision, we build homes, partnerships, communities and networks; since 1976, we have built more than 1 million homes and served over 10 million people.

HOW WE DO IT

Housing and shelter are the cornerstones of our work, but we believe happy and healthy homes require more than bricks and mortar – – they need to be part of a thriving community to really benefit the families who live there.

As such, our programmes support a range of home building and community projects, focusing on practical support that makes a real, tangible difference to the lives of those most in need.

We build affordable homes to tackle housing poverty around the world, and provide non-profit loans.

Our disaster relief work takes us across the world in support of communities affected by natural, and man-made, disasters.

We believe Water and Sanitation programmes are essential to help turn a house into a healthy home.

Upgrading slums is a key activity in many countries where the growth of informal settlements is an issue.

Sustainable activities include home insulation, fuel-efficient cooking stoves, and solar power.

INTERNATIONAL VOLUNTEERING OPPORTUNITIES

Welcome to Global Village, our short-term overseas volunteering programme. Our opportunities to volunteer abroad are nothing short of life-changing experiences. You will have a unique chance to directly contribute to Habitat for Humanity’s work on the ground. If you are looking to challenge yourself, you've come to the right place. We have an expert team of builders and volunteer coordinators who will help you make it all possible - from fundraising to laying bricks.

HOW IT WORKS

1 - Contact a team leader - ask any questions you may have and he/she will get back to you shortly

2- Register for a build - you'll have to pay the registration fee after which you'll receive information to help you prepare for the build

3- Start fundraising - we'll provide you with support and tips to successfully reach your target

Whether you're headed to Africa, Latin America or anywhere else, every short-term volunteer trip includes a donation, which helps us pay for local workers to build homes all year round. As well as helping to create local jobs, you provide a crucial boost to our productivity - allowing us to build more homes at a faster pace than ever.
